A note from Executive Artistic Director Dan Demers

Welcome to Hillbarn’s 2018 – 2019 Season! In celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s centennial we are excited to open with West Side Story, the 1957 musical that immediately gained fame for its bold artistic vision, and unflinching engagement with contemporary concerns of racial unrest, urban gang violence, rape, immigration and confrontations with the police.

Even now, in 2018 we still find ourselves engaged in debates around immigration and contemporary ethnic and racial divisions, the collision of cultures, scarcities between the haves and have-nots, and the role of law enforcement in protecting the fundamental rights of all people. West Side Story’s plea for tolerance continues to resonate through its outstanding musical score, memorable lyrics, and time-tested story. This Broadway classic continues to have relevance for every new generation.

Someday Somewhere
We’ll find a new way of living
We’ll find a way of forgiving

For years we have been referring to how art imitates life, and how we as a theatre company strive to shine a light and build community, through that art, with shared human experiences, social commentary, and the power of those who are open to it.

The 78th Season shares stories about family, commitment, adversity, revenge, and, of course, most importantly, love, and asks you to open yourself up to new ways of thinking.

Something’s coming, something good!

Dan Demers
Executive Artistic Director
