Hillbarn Theatre & Conservatory is thrilled to announce the 2022-2023 season curated to take patrons on an exploration of what it means to consider “The Other.” Artistic Director, Randy O’Hara notes about his first season, “Each of the six shows provides a powerful take on noticing and appreciating the differences in all of us. Theater allows us to see what people might not reveal instinctively, giving us a new perspective on what once seemed familiar.”

In tribute to America’s great composer, the late Stephen Sondheim, and in celebration of the return of live theater, Hillbarn opens its 82nd season with a production of the musical Gypsy, the story of the dreams and efforts of one hungry, powerhouse of a woman to get her two daughters into show business. Based both before and after Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 landmark A Raisin in the Sun, Bruce Norris’s play Clybourne Park, equal parts humor and hostility, explores the racism that drove both white flight and, fifty years later, patterns of gentrification. To celebrate the holidays, Hillbarn Theatre invites the entire family to delight in the pageantry and magic of ELF: The Musical. The show encourages audiences to open their hearts and minds to the importance of our connections to one another, the need to balance expectations and disappointments, the struggle to establish a work-life balance and our own capacity to believe in the power of the good in ourselves and others.
Both Gypsy and Elf: The Musical will feature students from our Conservatory program and community school partners.
January 2023 delivers the top-ranked choice from our January 2022 patron survey. A multiple Tony Award-winning theatrical tour-de-force, Assassins combines the late Stephen Sondheim’s signature blend of intelligently stunning lyrics and beautiful music as we journey through the dark side of the American dream. In March, playwright Topher Payne’s A Perfect Arrangement, drags history out of the closet. At a time when discrimination and witch hunts are increasingly becoming the norm again, A Perfect Arrangement, inspired by the true story of the earliest stirrings of the American gay rights movement, is a madcap classic sitcom-style comedy where the laughs give way to provocative drama as two “All-American” couples are forced to stare down the closet door. Keeping a promise made, we end the season with The Producers, originally scheduled for May 2020. Winning a record twelve Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night, it’s a comic tour de force that spoofs the big, old-fashioned Broadway musical while paying tribute to it at the same time.
In a world beset by seemingly intractable and overwhelming challenges, we invite our audiences to laugh, cry, learn, and belong.
Stay tuned for more information coming soon.
