“achingly beautiful, joyously uplifting – strikes an unforgettable chord in audiences and speaks to the power of music to connect us all.”

From the very first note, Once draws you in and never lets you go. This emotionally captivating musical is the only show to have music that won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Olivier Award and a Tony Award. On the streets of Dublin, an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant are drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, an unexpected friendship and collaboration quickly evolves into a powerful but complicated love story, underscored by emotionally charged music. Featuring all of the magical songs from the critically acclaimed film, including the Oscar-winning “Falling Slowly,” this achingly beautiful, joyously uplifting show strikes an unforgettable chord in audiences and speaks to the power of music to connect us all. A show like that only comes around Once.

In My Opinion

By Alan Hafter

Make no mistake, Once is a love story. It takes place in Dublin, Ireland where a 38-year-old street performer or busker named Guy is heard playing his guitar and singing. A Czech woman, Girl, overhears him and recognizes his immense talent.

Guy never pursued his career aspirations because like so many artists, he put off following his career dream by saying, “Once I get this and that sorted out, l’II do it.” There is always one more thing to take care of and the dream is ultimately put off for too long.

Girl convinces Guy to go to NYC and pursue his career and Guy’s father lends him the money. Guy and Girl’s brief romance may be over but…”what makes this musical really special and puts it in a different league is the music which holds your interest with wonderful and exciting quality songs. Almost from the first note, you realize you are listening to music that is extraordinarily distinctive, controlling, and arousing and in a word… impressive.”

Clearly, Once is a perfect show for a family with teenage children. It doesn’t gratify or indulge in any way, yet its message is so pure and beautiful, it becomes wholesome by the end of the show.

There is language that may offend some of our patrons, but these words only make the story better and we can assume most kids have heard it all, anyway.

I rate it PG-13 and a must see!
