The Music Man Kids

Book, Music, and Lyrics by
Meredith Willson

Based on a Story by
Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey

Based on Meredith Willson’s six-time-Tony-Award-winning musical comedy, The Music Man KIDS features some of musical theatre’s most iconic songs and a story filled with wit, warmth and good old-fashioned romance.  The Music Man KIDS is family entertainment at its best — a bold, brassy show that will have the whole town atwitter!

Show Description

Master showman Harold Hill is in town and he’s got “seventy-six trombones” in tow. Can upright, uptight Marian, the town librarian, resist his powerful allure?  The story follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize. The catch? He doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, whose belief in Harold’s power just might help him succeed in the end in spite of himself.

Director
Marlo Jae (MJ) She/her is a Bay Area resident, currently pursuing her BFA in Acting at Penn State University. She grew up doing Children’s theater in San Carlos and she has performed with various regional and community companies both in the Bay and outside. She has studied with groups including A.C.T in San Francisco, Emerson College in Boston, and AMDA in New York. MJ has taught at studios and programs across the Bay, including San Carlos School of Ballet and Young Actors Theater Camp, as well as directing and choreographing multiple productions at Carlmont High School. Anna Sieben
Music Director

Anna Sieben is thrilled to be returning to Hillbarn as music director this summer! You may recognize Anna from seeing her in several San Mateo High School shows, performing at the Rita Moreno Awards in 2023, or maybe just signing your child out at pick up! Anna is now a student at New York University where she is earning her B.F.A. in Musical Theatre at the New Studio on Broadway. Her passion for teaching continues to grow, having recently declared a minor in Educational Theatre at NYU after many years of teaching music and dance to young artists all around the Bay Area! Thank you to Hillbarn for fostering such a beautiful artistic environment.

Mary Kalita
Choreographer
Mary Kalita (she/her) is a veteran teaching artist and performer who believes strongly in the value of an arts education. Mary trained as a classical ballet dancer in her youth. Then she redirected her focus to the dramatic arts, and subsequently earned a BFA in Musical Theater from Millikin University. Mary has served as a musical theater teaching artist and choreographer in the Bay Area since 2007 to many myriads of K-12 students. In addition to her work in the classroom, she is also an SF Bay Area Theater Critics Circle award-winning actor and mostly recently graced the stages of New Conservatory Theater Center, SF Playhouse, Ray of Light Theater, and Berkeley Playhouse. Mary loves, equally, the experience of performing on a stage, and using those skills to help others progress in their own artistic journeys.
McKenna Whyte-Shearer
Stage Manager

McKenna is going into her third year as a BFA Acting Training student at the University of Hartford and is so excited to be a part of this project. She loves to perform but also work behind the scenes creatively, such as directing, writing or, in this case, stage managing! She thanks her friends and family for everything.
