You play the role of the Charity Hope Valentine in Sweet Charity, what, if anything, do you have in common with your character?  And how are you different?

Charity is like us all really-we all just want to be loved. Me, personally, I can be just as wacky as Charity. Unlike Charity though, I would probably never get a tattoo.

What inspired you to accept a role in Sweet Charity?

I fell in love with the script! Neil Simon-what more could you ask for!

What do you think the audience will be discussing on their way home after seeing Sweet Charity?

The ending-the show doesn’t tie everything up in a nice, neat bow. It leaves you wondering what’s next.

When did you discover your love for the theatre?

When I discovered Shakespeare or maybe it was when I saw James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause…either way, my love for it grows and grows.

How did you get started in theatre?

My very first show was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat which I performed in an outdoor theatre at the age of 12 in the desert of the Las Vegas Valley–needless to say, despite the rattle snakes, bugs, and burros, I was hooked.

What do you love about performing on stage?

Getting lost in the story and bringing joy to the audience.

What is your favorite and most memorable role you ever played?  Why?

I love to make people laugh more than anything so last summer when I got the chance to play Amy in Company, it was one of the most fulfilling roles I have ever taken on.
If you could pick one actor/actress to perform with on Broadway, who would it be?

Jeffrey Brian Adams, hands down.

Do you have any wacky rituals you do before curtain call?

I say three Hail Marys and just pray for the best.

What is one thing you are incredibly proud of?

My family. They are the most inspiring group of people I know!

What is one fact or fun thing or special/hidden talent that we don’t know about you?

I was born and raised in Las Vegas and I’ve only ever gambled once…I broke even.

Don’t miss your chance to see Monique Hafen in Sweet Charity May 5-29, at the historic Hillbarn Theatre in Foster City. Tickets available at
