FOSTER CITY, CA (September 11, 2017) – Hillbarn Theatre, the Peninsula’s premier theatre company, continues its 2017–18 season with Larry Shue’s award–winning comedy, The Foreigner (October 5–22, 2017). The scene is a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by “Froggy” LeSeuer, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time “Froggy” has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So “Froggy,” before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Taking the explanation that he’s a non-English speaker as fact, the lodge’s guests quickly begin revealing their secrets, and Charlie soon discovers scandals amongst some of the residents of the lodge. The winner of two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards, The Foreigner is “a constant invitation to relax and laugh at the foolishness of life” (Village Voice).
The Foreigner will perform at Hillbarn Theatre (1285 East Hillsdale Blvd., Foster City). Performances are Thursdays—Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Press night for The Foreigner will be Friday, October 6, 2017. Single tickets range in price from $28–$48 and are available now by calling 650.349.6411 ext. 2 or visiting www.hillbarntheatre.org.
Says Hillbarn Theatre’s Executive Artistic Director Dan Demers: “We believe our role as art makers is to not be silent or complicit in times of injustice and unrest. In light of recent events around our nation, the cast and creative team of The Foreigner, along with the staff and Board of Directors of Hillbarn Theatre, have unanimously decided to proceed with our upcoming production. My hope is that this production encourages community discussion, inspires personal reflection on the play’s timely themes of identity and otherness—and most importantly, makes the audience laugh.”
Led by Gary Gerber as Froggy, The Foreigner features an ensemble cast including (in alphabetical order) Robert Fairless, Ross Neuenfeldt, Lauren Rhodes, Damien Seperi*, Laurie Strawn, and Matt Waters.
