Today, we shine the spotlight on Christine Baker, who is the incredibly talented dance captain and featured dancer in our upcoming mainstage production of Sweet Charity.
Christine Baker is extremely excited to be performing in her 4th show with Hillbarn Theatre! She was last seen in the ensemble cast of last season’s Funny Girl and Curtains, and this season’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Central College in Pella, IA and enjoys traveling abroad. She would like to thank her friends & family for their continued love & support. Also, thank you to Dan Demers & Erica Wyman-Abrahamson for their inspiration and for giving her the opportunity to grow in theatre.
I think the audience will talk about how much they were entertained by the show. There are so many great moments. I hope they leave happier than when they came in, and, of course, hopefully they’re impressed by the dance numbers.
I was 12 or 13 when I saw my first musical, which was Phantom of the Opera. To this day, it is still my absolute favorite.
I love being able to show a different, more outgoing, side of myself when I’m on stage. The adrenaline that you feel when you are under the lights, performing for an audience, is unlike anything else. I love living in those moments! I, also, love being part of an ensemble because I’m able to share the stage with so many talented people and I get the opportunity to grow and learn from them.
My current role in Sweet Charity is already pretty memorable. Not only do I get to do Fosse choreography but I also have my first speaking part. The majority of my performance training is in dancing, so I really don’t think of myself as a theatre person. So having lines in a show is a huge deal for me! It’s a great challenge.
If you could pick one actor/actress to perform with on Broadway, who would it be?
Julie Andrews, who wouldn’t want to perform with Mary Poppins?
Do you have any wacky rituals you do before curtain call?
Not really. But I do lead dance warm-ups for the cast. Depending on the day, I might choose 90s pop music, or 70s disco. But usually, it’s hip hop. 🙂
What is one thing you are incredibly proud of?
I’m originally from Iowa, so I’m proud that I had the courage to move to the Bay Area in order to experience living in a new place. I’ve been here for 8 years, so clearly, it’s working out. 😉
What is one fact or fun thing or special/hidden talent that we don’t know about you?
I absolutely love to travel!! Some of the favorite places I’ve been are Granada, Spain, Rome, Italy and Cusco, Peru. My next adventure is coming up this July: Bogotá, Colombia!
Don’t miss your chance to see Christine Baker, in Sweet Charity May 5-29, at the historic Hillbarn Theatre in Foster City.
