MEET THE CAST: CHERYL RINGMAN

Cheryl Ringman - HostessToday, we shine the spotlight on Cheryl Ringman, who plays the role of Carmen and is a featured dancer in our upcoming production of Sweet Charity.

Cheryl Ringman (Carmen) is so excited to be returning to Hillbarn! She was last seen here playing Miss Mazzeppa in “Gypsy”, and June in “Chicago“. Recent credits include Kitty in “Drowsy Chaperone” with WCT, Mimi in “Guys and Doll’s” with BBB, Brooke Wyndam in “Legally Blonde” with PAP, Violet in “9 To 5“, and Morticia in “Addams Family” both with RWCCT. Lots of love and thanks to all who have been so supportive and to this wonderful, amazingly talented sweet cast!

What inspired you to accept a role in Sweet Charity?
I have always loved this show. I love performing at Hillbarn and I wanted to work with Erica Wyman-Abrahamson, our Director.

What do you think the audience will be discussing on their way home after seeing Sweet Charity?
That they didn’t realize all the great songs that came from this show. The choreography has
layer’s, it’s intricate and polished. The amazingly talented cast, and the ending…….everyone
forgets how it ends and wishes it could be different.

When did you discover your love for the theatre?
Probably in College……my first Musical Theater experience, and we did a production of  “West
Side Story”. The director knew people in Los Angeles, and we had some of the original
costumes worn on the tour! It was such a fun experience but one I wouldn’t get to do for
years to come.

How did you get started in theatre?
I took a 20 year hiatus from dancing, etc. after I got married, and to raise my two daughters.
One day I realized it may be time for me again and I started to take dance classes and got
involved with the Kiwanis shows and Chicken’s Ball of San Carlos. I heard of auditions for
Woodside Community Theater when they started their theater company up again. I received
The “Gypsy Robe” that first year, which was such an honor, and I was hooked ever since!

What do you love about performing on stage?
The instant feedback and gratification from a live audience and that every performance can
be different! I love being able to play character’s that may be totally opposite of who you are!

What is your favorite and most memorable role you ever played? Why?
This is a hard one! I have been very blessed to be able to play some wonderful roles, but the
most recent and fun role was playing “Morticia” in Addams Family. She is such an iconic
character to play. Just having my own makeup artist to transform me was so amazing and
experience I will never soon forget.

If you could pick one actor/actress to perform with on Broadway, who would it be?
Nathan Lane…..I think he would be a blast to be on stage with!!!

Do you have any wacky rituals you do before curtain call?
Not really…….but when I have a lead role I get really quiet and need to be by myself to
prepare. If I’m feeling low in energy I start jumping up and down or do jumping jacks to
perk myself up.

What is one thing you are incredibly proud of?
My two daughters! But if we’re talking theatre, etc., the fact that I pursued a passion that I
always wanted to do but didn’t get to until much later in my life and that I continue to put myself
out there and learn new things!

What is one fact or fun thing or special/hidden talent that we don’t know about you?
Not only did I study Jazz, Tap, Ballroom, and a little Ballet, ( my downfall!), I also took
Polynesian and we had a trio that performed at parties and shows. It was so Fun!
Also, you might find it Fun or Funny, that I was a Clipper’s Skipper Cheerleader when I was in
College in San Diego!
